The most interesting
The most interesting thing I lnaeerd in this chapter was about cirrhosis of the liver. I always believed that it was called by alcoholism. I didn't know that it could also be caused by chronic hepatitis, chronic inflammation of the bile ducts, and drugs or other toxins. I also found it amazing on all the damage that occurs. The liver doesn't function properly. The liver cells die and are replaced with fibrous connective tissue and/or scar tissue. The liver becomes enlarged, circulation is impaired, pressure builds up in the abdomen, the esophageal varices develop and can cause the other abdominal organs to swell. The abdominal organs can hemorrhage and cause hemorrhagic shock, which may cause hematemesis. Fluid can also build up in the peritoneal cavity which is caused by liver failure. The liver failure then causes albumin deficiency, hypoalbuminemia. Jaundice develops because of the bile ducts being blocked.Another interesting thing that cirrhosis does is how it affects men. The liver inactivates small amounts of femal sex hormones. When the estrogen is not inactivated they have a feminizing affect on males. They may develop breast (gynecomastia), palms of hands become red, hair on the chest is lost and female type distribution of hair may developed. Atrophy of the testicles may also develop. The damaged cells of the cirrhosis liver cause the liver not to perform its normal function of detoxification. Allowing these toxins to remain can affect the brain and neurologic disorders. Shaking may develop. An individual may go into a hepatic coma and possibly cause death. The sad thing is that there is no effective treatment of cirrhosis of the liver. An alcoholic can quit drinking to prevent further liver damage. An infection can be treated, edema can be treated with diuretics and portal hypertension can be treated with beta blockers. A liver transplants is the only way to restore the liver.
