Diseases of the Inte
Diseases of the Integumentary System makes me squirmy. I didn’t even want to lick my finegrs turning the pages. The story about trench foot was very interesting, so I decided to write about tinea or ringworm. There are many forms of tinea which is classified by its location on the body. Tinea corporis is a skin infection due to fungi. Fungi thrive in warm, moist areas. The causes could be long-term wetness of the skin (such as sweating), minor skin and nail injuries, poor hygiene. Tinea corporis can be contagious and also can be spread by pets.Tinea pedia or otherwise known as athlete’s foot is also characterized by itching, burning, and stinging between the toes and on the soles of the feet. The lesions may also appear as red, weepy vesicles, dry scales, or as fissures (crack-like lesions) between the toes. Blistering, peeling, cracking of the skin, and bleeding may occur.Tinea cruris is known as jock itch that is located in the groin area and inner thighs. Tinea cruris can be triggered by friction from clothes and prolonged wetness in the groin area, such as from sweating. Joch itch may be contagious and passed from person to person by either skin contact or unwashed clothing.Tinea capitis is located in the scalp with a mild scaly rash or patch of hair loss without a rash.Tinea unguium is a nail fungus; white patches on nails, eventually turn the nail brown. The nail thickens, cracks and may be destroyed. Practice good hygiene and keep the skin clean and dry. Take proper care of your nails. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly after contact with any fungal infection.Tinea barbae is also known as barber’s itch. The fungus affects bearded areas of the face and neck. This fungus may produce deep, inflammatory pustules and crusting around hairs.Tinea can be treated by antifungal medicines. Prevention of tinea includes keeping the skin clean, cool and wearing sandals or shoes at gym locker rooms and pools. Never share clothing, hair brushes or tools used for manicures and pedicures unless properly cleaned.
