So much of this chapter was fmilaiar, disorders of the digestive tract are fmilaiar to us all of course, but many of the diseases mentioned have been experienced by me or my family. I've experienced thrush first hand and was not happy. I felt real sorry for my baby daughter, she had it too. The medicine was yuk. My father had peptic ulcers, they did surgery back then (50 years ago). My sister Terry also had ulcers due to Helicobacter pylori. She was of course cured with antibiotics. Terry also had Hepatitis A. She thinks she got if from a needle prick. She was working in a hospital lab doing blood draws and reporting results. She later got vaccinated for B (as soon as possible). My ex-husband, was diagnosed with hepatitis C. He found out he had it in 1998, he got it from a blood transfusion in 1983. He had it for many years before he had symptoms. Since he drank a lot of beer his liver was doomed. He died from liver failure about a year ago. He never had any interferon treatment and would have taken a liver transplant if it was a option. His blood type was AB+ (or the one that is harder to type) I think. He lived a lot longer than the doctors thought he would. The kids and I all tested negative for Hepatitis C.My sister Jane had a spastic colon, she had a real hard time eating. Small amounts and lots of liquids was her diet. She was also very skinny. My father and sister Kathy both had appendicitis. My father also had a hernia operation when I was too young to remember. My mother had to have a cholecystecomy, the surgery revealed liver cancer. Probably from breast cancer spreading. It was interesting to read about the things my family didn't have, like pancreatitis and intestinal obstructions. Except my father-in-law did have a giant Doberman that died from a twisted intestine. Which is common among large dog breeds. All in all I am happy to escape so many diseases, so far.Is it just me or does reading about all these diseases make you feel incredibly vulnerable?
