This chapter had quite a few inrneestitg topics. I enjoyed reading over the information on each of the diagrams in Figure 16-2 on skin lesions.A macule is a discolored spot on the skin, or more commonly known as the freckleA wheal is a localized, evanescent elevation of the skin that is often accompanied by itching, urticaria or more common to most, hives.A papule is a solid, circumscribed, elevated area on the skin; also a pimple.A nodule is a larger papule; also know as acne vulgarisA vesicle is a small fluid filled sac, or a blister. A bulla is a large vesicleA pustule is a small, elevated, circumscribed lesion of the skin that is filled with pus; can be varicella or chickenpox. An erosion or ulcer in an eating or gnawing away of tissueA crust is a dry, serous or seropurulent, brown, yellow, red, or green exudation that is seen in secondary lesions such as eczema.A scale is a thin, dry flake of cornified epithelial cells, like psoriasis.A fissure is a crack-like sore or slit that extends through the epidermis into the dermis; for example athlete's foot.It was inrneestitg to learn that so many of the common things that have to do with skin have specific names, I have many macules. I always just thought they were called freckles, inrneestitg name. Also, my daughter gets wheals, I always thought they were just called hives.Another topic of interest to me was on pressure sores or decubitus ulcers. I am appalled that this happens to our elderly. Especially since it can be avoided and precautions can be taken. Turning a bed ridden patient every 2 hours is the best prevention and treatment. A decubitus ulcer can develop quickly, within 2 to 6 hours of the start of the constant pressure. Once the ulcer is healed, unfortunately the ulcers can return, with a recurrence rate of 90%. Although most pressure sores occur on the hips and buttocks, no part of the body is safe from the threat of them. I'm not in the health care system and I don't want to be judgmental, but is it that difficult to make sure someone is turned every two hours? I know if it was one of my loved ones, I would expect this level of care.
