Chapter 15 was prett
Chapter 15 was pretty good. The topic I found to be intrteseing was on Osteoporosis. I had no idea that woman with a small frame can be affected by this disorder. The great thing is that prevention is strongly prevented by a diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and weight bearing exercise. This is helpful information for me because I am 4 11 and live in Alaska where sunlight exposure is limited. I also am not a fan of milk products. The second intrteseing topic was on Scoliosis. It's involves an abnormal curvature of the spine. My son had scoliosis surgery in 2010 because he suffers from Muscular Dystrophy. His scoliosis is of a neuromuscular origin due to weak muscular development. I noticed while sitting in his wheelchair, he would lean to the left. Sometimes I would joke and ask him is that the way you sit or are you just chillin'? I knew it was scoliosis, but I would ask just to be humorous. I decided it was time to consider surgery and it was found that the curvature of his spine was at 79 degrees. Surgery is often considered for someone when it gets to be at 40 degree curvature. We also had to take his age into consideration, being that he was still a growing adolescent. But we also did not want to delay surgery too long because of the progressive decline in respiratory and pulmonary function. Surgery is no longer an option when the rate of vital capacity is affected. My son had to have cardiac and pulmonary clearance before his surgery. The whole procedure lasted a long eight hours. My son had spinal fusion surgery and is sitting tall and straight in his wheelchair. The surgeon was able to reduce the curve to 25 degrees. The surgery was the best choice I made for my son. He now has no more pain, his respiratory and pulmonary function has improved, and he no longer is susceptible to pressure sores on his buttocks. The pain aspect was from his thoracic cavity digging in his pelvic cavity. Scoliosis surgery can certainly improve the quality of one's life. I learned lots in this chapter that most of the ailments cannot be prevented. This includes injuries, genetic factors, and autoimmune factors.
