The topic in this chapter that I found to be menignaful to me is on Multiple Sclerosis. This is a Neurological disorder of the nervous system. I have a sister that has relapsing remitting and at her initial DX her chief complaint was being severely fatigued. Other symptoms include numbing of her face, blurred vision, and her left eye went cross. She was walking into walls and also lost the hearing in her left ear. Medical providers here in Fairbanks were unsure of the cause for all these symptoms. She finally went to Seattle Washington. After an MRI was ordered, three lesions were found on her brain. She had to have steroid treatment to help alleviate her symptoms intravenously, and today she is on the ABC drug Beta Interferon. She takes injections QOD. She maintains a healthy diet and gets plenty of exercise and is doing great. Sometimes she can be a little cranky and tired. She also takes muscle relaxants PRN. What is amazing to me, is that some patients don't take any of the ABC drugs. This is risky for anyone not to address and the individual is taking a gamble. Beta Interferon can reduce relapses in MS and help reduce the progression. It's the breakdown of the myelin sheath that causes it's progression. Demyelination causes the nerve to become sclerotic. Myelin sheath protects the neuron and acts as an insulator to insure the direction and velocity of the nerve impulse transmission. In other words it causes the nerve to misfire and impairs function. Multiple Sclerosis is more commonplace in the northern hemisphere rather in warmer climates. Maybe from the lack of Vitaman D. The second topic I learned about in this chapter is on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This is a serious illness and it is rapidly progressive. A progressive loss of motor neurons. I was amazed by information I had read was, one who suffers from this terminal illness usually has episodes of excessive laughing or crying spells, because the muscles of the mouth and throat are impaired. Death usually will follow 3-5 years after DX and results in pulmonary failure. Prevention is not certain because 90% of cases are undermined as to origin. It was once thought that many Veterans that served in the Gulf war were possibility exposed to a toxic nerve gas, or other cultures that may feast on bat's as a delicacy. However many clinical trials are underway and hopefully soon a medical breakthrough may become a reality. The nervous system was a great chapter!
