I had quite a few friends face this qnaduary. The pleasant notion (derived from conversation, Hollywood movies and government documents) is that school is a place where you can make a difference. The sad answer is that because we insist on including everyone, education has become a time-filler.At least in the USA, the Catholic schools have gotten a lot less rigorous since the 1950s. I'm not sure what kind of private school is best now, since many of them are making their money from being just like public school, but with more teachers per student and no gang wars. There's a lot of evasion of lower-income populations whose mandatory inclusion in schools has made them a war zone.
