Adrian,It's nice to
Adrian,It's nice to get a little sypoisns of what your first New York experience was like. There are, not surprisingly, several similarities to my own in there. I was also struck with horror and dismay at the cities shear disregard for recycling, littering and general environmental awareness. Growing up in California, these ideas have been implanted into my consciousness so it's been difficult to accept this city's forceful momentum working against all the eco-mania California holds so dear.Slowly, though, my blinders are forming. The trash bags strewn on the sidewalks don't appear so strange and horrible. They're just there. Just like the people I cram in next to on the subway are just there. Their handbags, briefcases or shopping bags nudge my butt and groin with every jerking-rock of the subway car and I close my eyes. Meditation is most necessary in Manhattan. The 8am rush hour could make the most humble of pacifists' blood boil and for those of us who struggle with a need to control our worlds– we learn to give ourselves over to the insanity; there's no use in fighting it, the pull is too strong. Your time in New York sounds like it was full, exciting and exhausting. You saw in four days what I saw over the course of four seperate week-long visits. I am approaching the end of my fourth month living here in New York and I am only just beginning to know the city deeper than its superficial outer-layer. There is so much to learn here, so many layers. The people are like no one you meet on the West Coast. Most New Yorkers are understanding, genuine, kind-but-wary, and always willing to help. Of course, stereotypes often supersede truth when one learns about something without experiencing it firsthand and this is often the case with New York's bad rap . Like in every city in the U.S., New York has its crime, poverty and malfunctions of the education system. Many New Yorkers are being left behind by their city and consumed by their ghetto. This is a problem. Most cities have this problem. But with more people and less space the consequence of this strife, in New York City, can become violent. I'm sorry those guys messed with you, Ader. Please do keep your word and come back to New York someday. You need to get to know this place. It has so many secrets. Good ones.
