So, Christmas vacation. What do you do?
|
Well, first there's actually Sinterklaas evening.
That would be "Saint Nicholas" in English sort of or "Santa Claus", though they're not the same person. According to this article, it seems Santa is derived partly from our Sinterklaas, but also from some English "Father Christmas" figure or something.
*thinks* Hmmm, I should read the whole page later today or something.
But anyway, over here, tonight is actually usually the time when giving/getting gifts, though some might do that during christmas. Sinterklaas here, however, is more a children's festivity than christmas. At least, that's how I feel about it. Christmas gifts and stuff seems more posh and ladidah rubbish. I could actually live with that, if it weren't for *some* shops who just think they can skip our St. Nicholas thingie and go straight for the Santa stuff. That's something that makes me sad, really.
Or to quote/translate a piece from a brilliant Dutch parody song, in which Sinterklaas meets Santa (and later even the Easter Bunny):
"I'm fed up with it, it's hasn't even been my birthday yet, and already there's Christmas stuff in the shops. Well, I'm going to postpone Christmas for a few weeks this year! Here, take this!" and then you hear a lot of fighting and stomping noises. :-P
Oh and at Christmas, it's my dad's b-day. Usually we just have a normal day, nothing special, like most of the birthdays at our house. But this year we're going to see a concert of a kozach (sp?) choir thingie. :-)
Oh and one last thingie, happy Sinterklaas to anyone celebrating! ;-)
There are FOUR brain cells!
