I'm feel sorry for you, Sean - I only had 3 months of trying to find a job and generally failing miserably this summer, so I can sort of sympathise on a tiny, tiny scale.
Would it help at all to mention that you're only 6 months off getting fixed term status at all? Maybe someone in the pulling strings department might then take you back for at least another semester to make it easier for you to find other work afterwards?
