the BMX, table tennis, synch swim and diving, and pretty much anything that involves the use of a horse (who's competing? - the horse or the rider...?) are total rubbish as events...

BMX I can understand (it's certainly a test of skill and so on, but there's such a huge element of luck involved) and I know a lot of people are against synchronised swimming, as well as 'judged' sports like diving, but table tennis? What's the objection to that?
As for riding - have you ever watched modern pentathlon? The athletes draw lots and only meet their horses 20 minutes before going out to perform. In the men's this year, three competitors (out of 36) had a clear show-jumping round and in the women's just one. Definitely a test of the rider's skill, not the horse's. The horses were all completely capable of clearing that course.
