hmm...wierd fault/issue with photoshop on my new laptop...
Ok so I have a shiney new laptop, a DELL with 4Gb RAM running winXP (of which 3.19GB RAM is readily available according to the 'properties' in "My Computer" and in Photoshop preferences it says that 1728Mb is available)

But since installing and using Photoshop (CS ver 8) I occasionally get error messages about there not being enough RAM available. It comes up mostly when I click and hold the shift key to select multiple areas with the magic wand on the flats AND occasionally when I go to save the document. In the past 2 weeks I've had a picture crash about 3 times that way and lost whatever was done since the last save. At least I have the habit of doing a save every 5-10 minutes or so, so not a dramatic loss each time.... but as we all know, there will inevitably come a day when I'm in the groove for an hour or so and will have forgotten...!

With the magic wand issue, if I deselect everything and then click each bit slowly one at a time they often do so just fine once again. Other times it won't let me do it at all and I can only select one area at a time for a while. Worst case has been that I've had to do a save, close the image and open it again to get it back working ok. I removed and re-installed Photoshop just in case something went awry the first time but it still does the problem.

So any ideas on what's causing this?...?

The only changes I have made to the Photoshop preferences is set the scratch disk to C:/ as I don't have a second HDD for this machine and have set the amount of RAM that photoshop uses to 60%

Please be aware that changing any of the hardware is not an option as this is a leased Education Department supplied laptop and I don't get any say in what they provide for me.

cheers
Sean

I colour stuff...
