and they've started at season 1 - episode 1 "Encounter at Farpoint part 1"!!!! copyright date 1987...
gawd was it THAT long ago!..???!!!
and man.... it was... kinda...
Lame.
Of course it introduced all the characters, including dweeby 15 year old Wesley, and Q, plus showing off the nifty 'new' ship from all possible angles as many times as possible as well as splitting the ship for the first out of only two times they ever do so in the entire 7 year series, and seeing Worf with his huge season 1 I-have-a-bowling-ball-for-a-brain head and his short haircut, and boring-as-hell-I'm-gonna-state-the-bleedin'-obvious Deanna Troi, and Riker without his beard...
and the story itself just wasn't *there* for me...
Maybe it's because we already know these guys for so long and the characters and series has/had developed over the 7 year run - which of course when this first aired it hadn't done yet (plus factoring in Voy and DS9..) but also because sci fi series today are just so much more...gritty... I suppose you'd call it.
Look at new BSG... didn't that get us all gripped to the screen? Even Fringe, V, Warehouse 13 (well it tries hard...), Supernatural, Smallville, Stargate Universe/Atlantis/SG1 - all have an edge to them that this episode just didn't have. I sincerely doubt that in today's TV that this show would get past the pilot if that's what they offered up. And remember the ruckus of a 5 year inter-connected episode/storyline that B5 caused to ST:TNG and DS9 at the time..?
anyway, I still enjoyed it though - if only to laugh at some of the bits and have a wave of nostalgia...
I colour stuff...
