I read about this a couple of months ago. It's only the modification of the metallic grid through x-ray laser bombarding and it only makes it transparent to UV.

We've had artificial aluminium-based ceramics with glass-like properties for at least ten years. And I remember the media touted this as "transparent aluminium" at the time:
