I'm afraid my camera died so I can't take pictures but I tie-dye using rope instead of thread, it gives very interesting patterns. I also do multiple layers of different shades of similar colors, plus bleach and very diluted black (to darken colors), so it gets more interesting. It's not quite as hippy as tie-dye is usually rumored to be. More distressed-jeans style look.
