(Im)Patiently Awaiting Results
From the audition!

So, I ended up reading for the two parts I thought I'd read for... a hooker and a waitress. Pretty fun actually.

I got there SUPER early. I mean, 6:15pm when the audition was at 7pm, but I work just around the corner, so I delayed as long as I could at work (left at 6 just in case there was traffic) but ended up getting in there first at 6:45 to fill out my paper work.

That meant I got to be first to sing. I brought music with me, but I only bought it Saturday morning, and my hubby didn't get to look at it until Monday (he's a pianist) and he informed me it was "Very different from what you're used to." Super. So, I'd had no practice with that, and brought my accompaniament CD with me PRAYING they would let me use it. They did. *phew!*

The director hardly looked at me while I sang, but I expected that. The stage manager watched me some of the time, and the pianist watched me emotionless. Again, not unexpected. It is an audition after all!

Then, the pianist ran me through my scales. Now, I'm a MEZZO soprano. I'm NOT operatic in any way, but he pushed me as far as I thought I could go before pushing me JUST a bit harder to get me to hit that High C. Yeah, I hit it. It wasn't as strong as my other notes, but I hit it on pitch!

Then, they gave me my two parts to read for. I went back into the theater with everyone else and listened through the wall as other men and women took their turns singing. Being first to sing meant I'd also be first to read, so I tried my best to memorize my lines. For the hooker, it was three paragraphs. About 1 1/2 for the waitress. I spent more time on the hooker. Her part needed it more.

When I went in to do my reading, the pianist was wrapping up and leaving. He took a moment to say to me, "I really loved your song." Wow. I wasn't expecting praise, so I did my best to keep focused as I walked into the room.

I sat down in the chair and went into it, starting with the hooker's part. At first, the director and stage manager didn't look up much, but about half way through, they were rapt with attention. I had no idea why, but kept acting, my hands gesturing, my lines in my left hand by my side. About two sentences from the end of the three paragraphs, the director stopped me to ask if I'd ever done the show before. I answered that I hadn't, and he and the stage manager started DYING laughing. I obviously missed the joke, but they were apparently amazed by my memorization abilities. I didn't look at the script once, and they were impressed.

The director lept to his feet, very excited, and he gave me a bit of direction for the waitress part. I'd seen one performance of it on YouTube, so I got the gist of the part. Then, he threw me a curveball; instead of just reading the text he told me to review, he wanted me to talk through the song... which I hadn't even READ!! But, when asked to do it, you do it.

I went through it, and did it standing up. There was this one really funny part I'd seen in the video, and when I did it, the director and stage manager both laughed, which is always a good sign. I didn't have that one down as well as the others, but I think I still rocked it fairly well.

The director stopped me, and talked about when people would get calls, which would be "soon" and then he said he was calling back other girls in my age group tomorrow (which is now tonight) because they were becoming a blur. Then he checked my schedule on the back of my application. See, we had to list conflicts at the door, so I did my best to take as many Wednesdays for dance class as I could, but leave the ones for Tech open so I could be there. He seemed pleased by that, saying that was going to be his next question; if I was willing to miss tap for tech. Duh.

No clue when we get calls to tell us if we've been cast or not, but I really hope to make it in. I think it would be a BLAST. Will try to let you guys know if you care :)

And thanks to Team Australia for trying to get "Friendly Star" for me. I would have LOVED to have performed that song, but "Bless the Broken Road" was a worthy substitute. :)
