So I got this email from a guy asking me about my page rates and availability... Ho hum I thought, I get 3 - 4 of these a week and it's usually from some wannabe who has no money (so he claims) but who wants a pro-level colouring for his 'Image/Darkhorse' submission.
So I replied, giving the standard explanation about my day job as a teacher and difficulty in meeting short deadlines as a result, and that I mostly do covers/pinups and the like if I do want some extra-beer-money etc etc and that I usually get *** amount per cover blah blah... and fired off the reply.
That was when I noticed the email address...
topcowent.com... it's Josh Cozine, one of their editors...
escuse my french but...F*ck... both ways.
The first way - Wow! TOPCOW comics are looking at my art and my website and someone there thinks I might be good enough to work for them!!!
The second way - ARRRGGGHHHH! Now they're going to just write me off and never speak to me again! That's it Sean, you screwed the pooch that time!
As it is, I did get a reply back from them. He said that it was Ok, and that he just wanted to put me on a master pool list of sorts so that if they're ever hard up for a colourist or need a fill in in a hurry then my name might pop up to the top of the pile. Well that's what he said anyway... whether that ever actually *happens* in reality, well I'll just have to wait and see...
So I replied back saying that if it were a Topcow gig then I'd be massively more motivated to do the job and would move hell and high water to do so - or words to that effect. Maybe this has saved some of the disaster of my original reply but, well again, I'll just have to wait and see...
Not to worry though, I've still got the $80k a year day job at least so it's not like I'm a starving artist.
Still, working (even casually, ad hoc) for Topcow would be mighty cool...
