The problem with avatars seems to be a difference between Johan's old hosting and John's current hosting. If you uploaded an avatar whilst it was on Johan's hosting, it will still work now, but any attempts to change or upload a new avatar don't work. Not sure exactly why yet, I'll have a look at the error messages sometime and poke John about it.
