So my wife and I are thinking of going to Hawaii for a holiday in July this year (first one for me overseas in 10 years!) but am wondering where're the best places to go/see/do etc, which island is the best to stay on, and if anyone can recommend some hotels and so on.
We're looking for a holiday that has a nice tropical island, decent shopping/touristy bits - I like geography and history inclined stuff naturally, and isn't a place that is subject to people engaging in coups and the like periodically. Hawaii seems to fit the bill.
But basically I know nothing about Hawaii except that is has a bunch of active volcanoes, its the 50th State and people get "lei'd" a lot there while walking around saying "book 'im Dano" on their surfboards...
I might add here that we have 2 weeks for this. We're also considering to come to Chicago for a few days to see relatives that Raisa (wife) has there and then move on via Europe on a round-the-world ticket as they often work out cheaper.
So where's a good place to stay in Chicago as well...?
