Numerical equivalent chart below.
My Aunt Arlene was kind enough to buy me an entertainment center as a belated house warming gift. I did some window shopping earlier and took some pictures to give her an idea as to what I was looking for (found a good one at a thrift store---for USD $3,000! Do I not know what the definition of "thrift" is?! Good Lord!
Anyway, I went there as well as to NEX (Navy Exchange) Home Furnishings. NEX Home Furnishings had some good ones, too, and were much more reasonably priced--$215 and $235. She had planned to take me to Kmart, which she did, and when we got there, there was only one entertainment system to choose from! JUST ONE! But not only was it damn good, it was also closer in height to my bookcases, which I planned on placing it smack dab in the middle of (the ones I window-browsed were at least as tall as me, 5' 10"). AND, to make it even better, it was only $100. Who knew that you could get that so good and cheap by going to a corporate store?
Well, when I get home, the box the system came in was so heavy I couldn't carry it; I had to "walk" it into and through the house and into the living room. I broke open the box, only to find that many of the wood panels weren't labeled, which lead to a lot of guess work when assembling.
I started working on the system last night, getting very frustrated as the screwdriver kept slipping from the screws. 17 screws later, I realized how big an idiot I was when it hit me I was using a flathead screwdriver on Phillips head screws. GRRRRR!
I finished assembling the system this morning and I thought about where I was going to put it. Obviously, I hadn't given up on putting it in the middle of my two bookcases, which lead to the natural conclusion that the system would go in the center of the wall with the bookcases one vacuum cleaner width apart (also gives easier access to the wall plugs ).
Having measured the living room when I just bought the place, I whipped out my old poorly-drawn diagram and knew that the wall was 13' 3". Calculating the center of that, I marked down the wall with a pencil. I then calculated the center of the system, taping an old business card in the general area, and marking that off with the pencil. I then aligned my two markings together, placing the center of the system in the center of the wall, and I then moved the bookcases to their new homes (1' 4.5" away on either side of the system). So yay! Everything is centered against the wall! Or is it?
Measuring the distance from the wall corner to the bookcases, the left bookcase is 10" away from the corner and the right bookcase is a little over 12" away from the other corner. Fess up, people! Who replaced my edjumacation with fuzzy math?
Here's how it all looks:
A bigger picture of the one above (1.4 MB) can be found here:

And now, the numerical comparisons:
$3,000 = £1.518,15 = €2.240,81
$215 = £108,80 = €287,84
$235 = £118,92 = €314,62
5' 10" = 178cm
13' 3" = 403cm
1' 4.5" = 42cm
10" = 25cm
12" = 30cm
