Today (Sunday) is my final day at home. I've been running ragged trying to get the last little nuances tied up (buying grass killer so the lawn won't have to get mowed, buying a new air filter so no one'll have to replace it for me while I'm gone, washing my clothes, ironing my uniform, PACKING [AK!], buying jeans [since I have great difficulty finding them in my size, this was an insurmountable task!], and running to the clothing store several time to buy uniform items I'd missed). Tomorrow I'll be in Norfolk, Virginia (30 minutes thatta way!) for a week being processed for training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. After about a month of that, I take off for Kuwait, and after that, Iraq.
If I can get internet while in Iraq (and if I can, it'll be quite expensive--as in US $75 - $100 a month [€56 - €74]) I'll make sure to post periodically to let you guys know I'm still alive. All in all, this entire trip should take me about 7.5 months to complete. I'll miss Christmas with the family yet again, which sucks, but that's life, and I'll have a scant few people looking after my place while I'm gone, so I've got my fingers crossed no one'll rob me while I'm gone.
"Farewell, wherever you fare, till your eyries receive you at the journey's end!"
