That's true. Although this isn't in the same vein as the elementary school idea, because dur- would come from duro or whatever the Latin word for it is. There are actually spelling rules you know. Anyway, since I'm too lazy to look it up, my own knowledge of Spanish is that durar means to last. So all those derivations you're making are hardly ridiculous.
Hey, ridiculous comes from whatever the Latin word for ridicule is!
